How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer

Wedding Photography ~ Pre—Wedding Shoot

Pre—wedding photo shoots are a great way to help you become acquainted with your photographer’s style, work manner and personality. As a result you will feel more at ease when your wedding day arrives. Hopefully by the time your wedding day arrives, you will be assured that your choice of wedding photographer and the quality of wedding photography you have chosen is the right one.

After a pre—wedding photo shoot, as your wedding day approaches, you should be on familiar terms with your wedding photographer. A pre– wedding shoot is sometimes offered as part of a wedding photography package or as an extra option. In any case it may be worth considering choosing a package that includes a pre—wedding shoot.

Wedding Photography ~ Communicate Your Needs To Your Photographer

If you want to request a particular pose or need a specific guest family member photographed at your wedding, negotiate it with your photographer beforehand. Don’t expect that because you have seen or linked what another wedding photographer has done at another wedding, that your particular photographer will know what you are thinking of. If these are important issues to you, make sure your photographer doesn’t miss anything, by discussing a wedding photography plan, before the wedding day.  In Short, it is a good idea to ask questions and make sure your needs are clear, during appointments rather than to be disappointed with your special wedding photographs afterwards.

Create a photo plan with your photographer.

Wedding Photography ~ Selecting Wedding Photography Packages

If you have booked a wedding photography package read the fine print to see what is exactly on offer. How many hours of coverage and how many photographs or images will be shot on the day?

Who keeps the proofs? Do you also receive the originals such as negatives or digital files in full resolution? Some wedding photographers now offer digital files or negatives with photography services only, allowing you to print your own pictures whilst others have retained wedding album packages only.

If you do receive the negatives or digital files how long after the wedding do you receive these? Some photo studios offer negatives or digital files after a certain period of time has lapsed.

Wedding Photography ~ Avoid Disappointments

Have you seen an example of a full wedding shot by your wedding photographer or just the glossed up studio displays?

Ask your wedding photographer for advice about your plans, locations and colours etc. Wedding photographers are usually family orientated people who are approachable and not scary!

Wedding Photography ~ Comparing Wedding Photographers by Qualifications

The wedding photography industry is unregulated. Choosing your wedding photographer without formal qualifications is your risk. The majority of ‘self made’ wedding photographers are genuinely skilled and no doubt professional.  Just be aware that any person can buy a camera and call themselves a wedding photographer.

Most professional wedding photographers have successfully trained and completed as much as three years full time study that is accepted by industry standards. Is Yours?

Wedding Photography ~ Before You Sign Away…

Read what is presented to you.

Ask about cancellation costs. Most professionals agreeably have a non-refundable deposit which you forgo if you cancel.

When wedding photographers take your booking they can turn away anyone else requiring the same date as yours. If you cancel, the photographer may not be able to book the couples he/she turned away.

However, It is important to book early to avoid disappointment if the photographer you have wanted is already booked.

You should never feel pressured into agreeing to anything you are not sure with.
